Barb and Baden’s Excellent German Adventure – Part 6

It’s been about 10 days since my last update as there has been some difficulty in getting access to a reliable Internet computer for a while. Anyway, here’s what’s been going on for the past while:

Dec 21:
Today we left the town of Garmisch and headed off to Kempten where we would board the train to the north of Germany. The drive to Kempten was about 2 hours and went through some seriously winding roads. The decision to rent the BMW definitely paid off here as driving this stretch was a real joy.

Barb and Baden’s Excellent German Adventure – Part 5

On Monday we were finally set to go for our scheduled tour of the BMW factory in Munich. Needless to say, this was going to be a highpoint of the whole trip for me. The BMW head office and main factory in Munich was built over 75 years ago and at the time it was on the far outskirts of town. Now it is in the middle of Munich as the city has grown around it.

When we signed in at the registration desk, we happened to meet up with some friends of mine, Dane and DeAnna from Seattle whom I met a few months ago at our mutual friend’s (Marty) place. I had expected that I might run into them as Dane said that him and Deanna were also going to be in Germany around this time. Dane and DeAnna were travelling with their friends Jamie and Amy also from Seattle.

Barb and Baden’s Excellent German Adventure – Part 4

Well we sadly left Barb’s dad at the train station in Berlin and said our goodbyes before heading off to the Bavarian city of Münich. We arrived in Münich on Friday afternoon and prepared ourselves for our 4 day stay here.

We first checked out the local area around our hotel and found ourselves conveniently located about 2 blocks from the main downtown shopping area. On Friday night, there seemed to be the whole of Münich out doing their Christmas shopping after work. The outdoor walking mall is a good 100 ft wide and we were all shoulder to shoulder most of the way. All of the major department stores have these great Christmas displays with animated toys and electric trains running through it.

Barb and Baden’s Excellent German Adventure – Part 3

Well our time in Berlin came to a close and we tried to make the most of the last few days.

One of the sites that we went to was the Berlin Olympic stadium. We only stayed there a short time as it was closed but we walked around looking at the outside of with it’s distinctive 5 Olympic rings suspended by wired between two columns. It was at this site that the 1936 Olympics were held. For most people, this Olympic games were most remembered for the games where Hitler wished to showcase his “master race” to the world but was upstaged by the track and field successes of Jesse Owens.

It’s amazing that it took someone 6 years to find my spelling mistake. :)

Barb and Baden’s Excellent German Adventure – Part 2

Greetings from Berlin!

We have been in Berlin for a few days now and things have been going quite well. Barb’s dad Joe (who is staying in Berlin for a few weeks) met us at the train station and we are now staying at the Pension (guest house) that he stays at. Our room is simple but nice and close to the local U-Bahn (pronounced ooo-bahn) station which is the subway. The bathroom is certainly interesting as it measures about 4ft x 2.5ft with a 24″ square stand up shower.

Barb and Baden’s Excellent German Adventure – Part 1

It’s been 10 months in the planning stages but the big day has finally arrived. In less that 6 hours Barb and I will be heading off to the airport on our next excellent adventure to Germany.

When we went on our last big trip (to the South Pacific), we started a tradition of sending out electronic versions of postcards to friends and family as we progressed through our trip. At each major stop we were able to find an Internet cafe an send these updates.
